The Cornwall Wildlife Trust - founded in 1962 - fulfils a role occupied by no other countryside organisation. We are concerned solely with Cornwall and deal with all aspects of conserving the county's wildlife and habitats. Our detailed knowledge of Cornwall's habitats, based on years of survey work, places us in a unique position to defend the wildlife outside nature reserves. Our advisory work includes over 400 consultations each year from the County and District Councils on planning applications.

We seek to raise awareness amongst the adult public of today and, through schools and youth groups, the decision makers of tomorrow. We also have specialist groups working on a variety of conservation projects. These groups are mostly made up of keen volunteers.

An important resource to ourselves and the county as a whole is the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS). They have been based at our headquarters since 1997. They manage and make available a huge amount of wildlife and earth science information relating to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Since 1992 we have also had our own consultancy arm, Cornwall Environmental Consultants, which raises funds for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust by taking on paid consultancy work.

We currently manage 54 nature reserves across the county totalling nearly 5,000 acres and including a variety of Cornwall's unique and rare habitats. In Mid Cornwall we have a number of heathland nature reserves, the largest being Helman Tor. Parts of this nature reserve are in the SAC and linked closely with nearby Goss Moor. Goss Moor and Helman Tor nature reserves are important strongholds for the marsh fritillary and the links between the two should be made stronger through the LIFE project and ultimately have a wider influence across wildlife habitats of Mid Cornwall.
