The importance of wetlands is relevant to most of the work of the Agency. The following policy has been produced to ensure that wherever possible, activities by the Agency, and by people we regulate or influence, wetlands are retained, restored or created.
Policy Statement
We recognise that wetlands are vital to the overall health of the environment as they Moderate the extremes of flooding and drought, assist with aquifer recharge and the Control of diffuse pollutants, provide economic products and attractive landscapes for People and wildlife. Their importance will increase as a result of climate and land use Change. We will take action, on our own and in partnership to:
- Conserve, enhance and re-create the wetland capacity of catchments as part of our contribution to rebuilding biodiversity on a landscape scale
- Secure the long term sustainable management of wetlands when planning and implementing our regulatory and operational business, thereby meeting our local, national and international responsibilities
- Promote a better understanding of the functions and value of our wetland assets and the need to maintain their services as part of a sustainable solution to the effects of flooding, pollution and climate change.
An action plan will be developed to provide a coherent framework within which the conservation and enhancement of wetlands is incorporated into our core activities.

This Project provides an exciting opportunity to restore the degraded channel and water table of the River Fal to the benefit of river and wetland wildlife in this internationally important wildlife site. We are keen to maximise opportunities for people to have access to these areas for quiet recreation through the creation of boardwalks and new pathways.
Related Projects
Many Agency teams across England and Wales will be involved in similar projects, either restoring or creating damaged watercourses or wetlands. Area Biodiversity Teams would be the best contacts, via the Agency website.
Many of these projects utilise advice from the River Restoration Centre. Their website gives details of past and present projects.
